Safety Alert: Computer use can be monitored and is impossible to completely clear. If you are afraid your internet usage might be monitored, call our toll-free hotline at With the changing season comes another important time of the year: Domestic Violence Awareness Month. DVAM is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of these issues, share resources, and most importantly, support survivors. These tools—words, actions, and resources—can help you support someone who shares their personal experiences with you.

It takes courage for a survivor of sexual assault or domestic violence to share their story with anyone. We hope the suggestions offered this month can help. During 31DaysOfDVAM social media campaign, we highlighted domestic violence awareness and prevention related statistics, resources, and issues each day in October.

DVCounts indicates for 2 years in a row our state has had the highest demand for domestic violence services in the country! Sometimes victims of domestic violence have to choose between calling for help or keeping a roof over their heads. Advocates are the essential part of ending and preventing domestic violence. They carry stories and experiences of working with survivors in their hearts. Today we honor victim advocates who are exposed to different forms of trauma. Self-Care is critical in our path of helping others finding safety and healing!

Survivors have the right to use technology and social media safely and without fears but sometimes abusers misuse technology to monitor, stalk and harass victims of domestic violence. Abusers use a variety of tactics to gain and maintain power and control in their relationships. In 98 percent of domestic violence cases, victims will experience financial abuse, which means their abusers will deny them access to money and financial resources they need to break free.

Financial abuse is one of the primary reasons domestic violence victims stay in or return to abusive relationships. Become an advocate. Break the silence and use your voice online and in-person to spread awareness and extend support to those affected by domestic violence. Volunteer at a local organization committed to helping those affected by domestic violence. Participate in local domestic violence awareness events.

Stay informed.
